February 17 CNA Board Meeting Canceled

Please note that CNA board meeting has been canceled. The board will not meet this Wednesday, Feb. 17. The next meeting will be held in March. Date and time to be announced later this month.

The CNA board had planned to hear proposals from various private security companies. The board decided to table the issue of hiring private security. The board was concerned that not enough Creekside residents had been made aware of the private security proposal. The board hopes this short pause will give all Creekside residents an opportunity to weigh in on the issue. The board also noted that a temporary delay would allow surrounding communities to examine their own security needs and options. Hopefully, all neighborhoods in the Creeksdie area will join together and move forward with a community-wide security plan within the next year.

The Creekside Neighborhood Association meets the 3rd Wednesday of every month. You are invited to join your neighbors in discussing issues, concerns and victories affecting Creekside and the Natomas community as a whole. Please join us on the following dates:

CNA Meeting for Wed., January 20th: This is an important meeting. At this meeting Creekside residents will discuss and determine whether hiring a private security company to patrol our streets is right for Creekside. If you want private security you need to attend this meeting and be heard!

CNA Meeting for Wed., February 17th: At this meeting, Creekside will host a private security fair. Representatives from various private security companies will be available to answer your questions about their services and costs. Note: this meeting's Agenda is subject to change depending on the outcome of January 20th meeting. Meaning, if there is lack of support, or strong oppoistion to the hiring of private security, we will not have a security fair.

CNA Meeting for Wed., March 17th: Would you like to meet the candidates running for Sacramento city council (District 1). CNA will host a meet and greet for Natomas residents. This is your opportunity to meet and ask the candidates their opinion on flood control, police protection, DNA light rail, and the recently announced Arco Arena land swap deal. This meeting is subject to change in order to accomodate the candidates' schedules.

Security Patrol in Creekside

Creekside Neighborhood Association held its regularly schedule meeting this past Wednesday. The entire meeting was dedicated to discussing whether or not Creekside should seek bids to hire a security company to patrol our community.

Matt Caroll from Paladin Security discussed the benefits of hiring a private security company at the last Creekside Neighborhood Association meeting. Representatives from Homeowner Associations located inside Creekside also attended the meeting.

Mr. Caroll summarized his experience in the industry and Paladin's philosophy toward its employees and communities it serves. Paladin comes across as dedicated to providing good customer service. Endorsements from other HOA's that employee Paladin this assertion.

The leadership at Paladin all have a background in law enforcement. Mr. Carroll was formerly with the West Sacramento Port Authority before it was privatized. He holds a number of law enforcement related accreditations. And the security officers employed by Paladin are all armed security professionals that are well trained compared to other security companies. Many security companies only observe and call the police. Not Paladin. Paladin will approach suspects, try to diffuse or prevent a situation, but will arrest suspects if necessary.

Now how much is this going to cost?

Well, I can give you generalizations but not specifics. Based on certain assumptions, it would cost each resident about $200.00 a year, or just about $16 a month. This is on the high end. There are many patrol variations that affect cost. And also depending on how large the pool of homes contracted, the per month cost could easily sink to below $10 a month.

What services would Paladin provide?

As mentioned above, Paladin offers various packages that can be custom tailored to a neighborhood's needs. But based on the above assumption and cost, this is what we would get for $16 per month:

3 random night patrol
1 random daytime patrol
Respond to calls for service. After first calling 9-1-1, you call Paladin and they will too dispatch a Paladin officer to any calls involving suspicious activity or crime in progress. But call 9-1-1 first. Paladin is not a replacement for the Sacramento PD
burglary alarm response
car lock out service
vacation check service
battery jump service
Paladin officers will even escort you from your car to your home if there is a suspect or situation that makes you feel unsafe
Call city to report street light outages
Call city to report city code violations such as abandoned cars and graffiti
Note: Creekside is a Neighborhood Association. Creekside will not hire Paladin or another security company on behalf of all Creekside residents. Only those Creekside residents that pay the monthly fee will be entitled to the above services. I am forming an interest list. See below.
Yard signs could be provided to indicate your home is protected by Paladin.

What is the next step?

The Creekside leadership and leadership are discussing various options on how to proceed, whether to contract with Paladin, Sac Sheriff or PD or another security company with unarmed guards. Our next meeting will we held the 3rd Wednesday in January. We need your help and input on this important decision. Please join us then. Also, please feel free to discuss on the CNA Yahoo Group.

I would like to start forming a list of those interested in contracting with a security company. I need to hear from those that are interested and willing to pay the $16 a month or less for the above provided services. We need at least 100 homes to get this off the ground. In closing, I think is important that Creekside hire some form of security to patrol our neighborhoods. The communities surrounding Creekside: Westlake, Natomas Park, Homecoming Apts, John Laing Homes, and Hampton Village have all taken this step. This leaves Creekside in the middle without any security patrol. and deterrent. As we learned from Kurt McCray, Sac PD's neighborhood watch coordinator, the goal is to move crime out of your neighborhood. The problem as you can see, is we don't want the crime being pushed out of the surrounding communities into Creekside. We want to push it outward and out of Natomas altogether.

Natomas Police and Community Resource Center Looking for Donations

Keeping our neighborhood clean and pleasing to the eye is very important to many Creekside residents. Recently, we have had multiple vehicles that are parked on Creekside streets for long periods of time.  Besides looking horrible from collecting dust and cobwebs, taking up space on our already narrow streets and being a magnet for crimes, these vehicles parked for long periods of time are also violating Code Enforcement.  To clean up Creekside streets, residents requested the assistance of the City.  Here are some facts provided by Code Enforcement.

"Community members are on the right track in reporting all violations.

It is important to remain diligent in reporting all crimes or violations in your community. This will not only assist in lowering crime levels, but will help to alleviate blighted conditions and hopefully in turn maintain/increase property value levels.

As far as the individual/vehicle owner being held accountable; let me explain the on-street enforcement process.

Code officers will normally respond to reported vehicles within 1-3 days. At the time of inspection the officer will:
  A. Determine the registration date/stolen (too many months out of registration may be immediately towed).
  B. Check the condition of the vehicle (missing major components may be immediately towed).
  C. Check the location/surrounding circumstances (is it leaking fluid or parked causing a hazardous situation).

All of these, and more conditions will assist in the officers' determination. Most of the time the vehicle will be marked, and the officer will return in 3 days to re-check. If the vehicle remains in the same location, it may be towed. When vehicles are towed, the owners are directly held accountable for recovery costs."

Instead of meeting at Homecoming Apartments, we are planning a field trip to the Natomas Police & Community Resource Center (next door to Hollywood Video & The UPS Store - in the Safeway shopping center).

We will still meet at 7pm and the meeting will last an hour. We will tour the Natomas Police & Community Resource Center and talk about the various services available to the community.

4th of July Festivities - A Great Creekside Event

(Due to the high winds and the weight of the balloons,
some balloons had to be popped to prevent the arch from breaking.)

The Creekside Neighborhood Association Board, along with a local reporter and some friends and family started to build the balloon arch at 4:30 p.m. By 6:00 p.m., even with strong winds and threats of the arch ribbon breaking, the arch was extended over Naponee Court, the meeting place for the festivities.

Many neighbors came at 6:00 p.m. to decorate their bicycles and scooters for the parade. By 6:45, Officer Farren from the Sacramento Police Department was there to lead our 1st annual parade from Naponee Court. It headed east on North Platte, turned around in Mankato Court, and went back westward to Naponee Court. Many neighbors came out to cheer on the parade participants.

By 7:00 p.m., our 3rd annual block party began with good smelling barbeques, lots of delicious food, children having a great time chasing each other from one end of the court to the other, neighbors building new friendships and old friends strengthening their existing ones.

We ended the night with a lot of fireworks, some small and loud, others large and colorful.

Our block party is a wonderful tradition that has grown over the last 3 years. Next year we will be adding more fun activities.

Now that the weather is nice, Creekside children are playing outside. Please remember to drive slowly through our narrow streets. Watch out for children at play. It is everybody's responsibility to keep them safe.

Be a Considerate Neighbor

With our houses in close proximity to each other, and windows open in the warm nights, remember to show more consideration to neighbors by:

Keeping the noise level to a minimum especially late at night
Turning down music in your vehicles when driving through the neighborhood
Be aware of your dogs that bark all day and all night when left alone

Remember to clean-up after your pets when walking around the neighborhood. A Dog Park will soon open in the Regional Park between Creekside and Inderkum.

Helicopter over Creekside

At 11:20 p.m. on June 21, the Sacramento Police Department sent out the helicopter looking for a missing 35 year old woman and an infant. The person was later found.

Good News for Natomas

Thanks to the hard work of community leaders the North Natomas Finance Plan went forward today and was supported by about a dozen speakers - no one opposed - and the City Council voted unanimously to support the plan.

The community worked with developers and with the highest City officials (Mayor Johnson and Manager Kerridge) to compromise and balance a budget on tangible dollars - addressing a complete solution to the previously fatally flawed NNFP.

Mayor Johnson thanked us for our hard work.

As a result of these efforts we will get our fire station on the west side of I-5. Its build out will be expedited.

We worked hard to protect the revenue sources intended to stabilize our community - we found other funding to complete the North Natomas library and we found money for a community center and the top transportation project in our region - an over-cross at El Centro.

In the future we will also be able to build a police sub-station and other transportation related projects.

This advancement was a great success for Natomas and while the NNFP is still not perfect it is much improved from where it was back in October.

Definitely cause for celebration as we right the ship and move our region closer to its potential.

1) Speed Lumps (bumps with cut outs for emergency vehicles) on Kokomo Dr. (by the park and Homecoming Apartments)

2) Speed Tables (kinda like bumps but flat on top) on North Park in front of H. Allen Hight

3) A STOP sign at the intersection of Kokomo and New Market (behind Safeway)

City of Sacramento Curfew Law by Capt. Hahn

The City of Sacramento has a curfew law that makes it a misdemeanor for
any minor to remain in any public place or any establishment within the
city during curfew hours - which is any time after 10:00 pm. There are
some exceptions to this ordinance such as if the minor is with their
parent or attending an official school function, religious function, or
organized dance or sporting event that is supervised by adults.

The Sacramento Police Department will conduct random Curfew Sweeps over
the next several months in an attempt to ensure that young people are
complying with this City Ordinance.

If you would like more information about Sacramento’s Curfew
Ordinance, you can go to www.cityofsacramento.org and select “City

Codes”. The Curfew Ordinance is 9.40.020 of the Sacramento City Code.
It is the hope of the Sacramento Police Department that minors will be
engaged in positive and productive things late at night as opposed to
being violation of the Curfew Ordinance.

Kops-N-Kids summer camp registration opens

Registration begins today for a summer camp program that teams Sacramento youth with area law enforcement.

The 23rd annual Kops-N-Kids camp provides children ages 9 through 13 with a week of sports, cheer and dance sessions with members of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

The camp also features gang resistance, drug awareness and violence prevention materials and activities, the organization's Web site states.

Cost of the camp is $25 per camper for the week. The fee was lowered last year, down from $35, in light of the economic downturn, states a news release by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, a participating agency.

The number of hot meals served each day was increased last year, an action that will continue this year. Campers also receive T-shirts, gear bags and prizes throughout the week.

Scholarships are available for students who have participated in the national Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program.

Carmichael Elks Lodge, Maloof Entertainment, the Sacramento River Cats, Elk Grove Subway, Noah's Bagels, Wells Fargo Bank, the Target Corp., the Coca Cola Bottling Company and other businesses are helping support the camp program.

Free busing is available from certain locations in the San Juan, Rio Linda, Twin Rivers, Elk Grove and Sacramento City Unified school districts.

The camp is being held at Rosemont High School, 9584 Kiefer Boulevard, Sacramento.

Tips for Burglary Prevention by Sac PD

This time of year the city of Sacramento sees a general increase in property related crimes. This year is no exception. The Police Department is seeking your assistance in reducing this increasing problem in your neighborhoods. The most important thing you can do is to call the police if you happen to see any suspicious activity. We also want you to make your residence uninviting for the potential burglar. This can be accomplished by the following:

Develop rapport with your neighbors. Start a Neighborhood Watch
Have plenty of lighting around the perimeter of your residence, as well as all entries into the home.
Install a burglar alarm that rings inside/outside your residence.
Install screws in the track above the sliding door frame.
Have solid doors with strong locks and strike plates at all entrances.
Install door viewers with wide-angle lenses.
Use deadbolt locks that extend at least one inch from the edge of the door.
Lock your doors when you are away and when you are home. Dont leave your garage doors open when you are not in them.
Close and lock all your windows when you are away even for just a few minutes.
Keep a radio or TV on during the day to give the appearance that someone is home.
If someone knocks on your door and you dont want to open it, make lots of noise so it is apparent someone is home. If it appears no one is home they may enter the back yard and attempt to get in.

Just remember to look for clues that someone may be casing your neighborhood. A stranger at your door asking for someone you dont know may be checking to see if someone is home. Many burglars simply gain entry through unlocked doors and windows so please close and lock all doors and windows when you are away!

Keep your hedges and trees trimmed away from your house. Provide a good line of site for your neighbors to observe your property to see what is going on. Tall hedges and overgrown trees provide cover for someone to break in to your home unnoticed.

If youre gone for an extended period of time dont make it obvious. Use timers on lights inside and outside the home. Stop the mail and the newspaper. Have a family member or friend keep an eye on your residence while you are away.

Keep your valuables in an unlikely place. Most burglars go directly to the bedroom, and especially to the dressers and night stands.

Remember that a crime can only be committed if three elements are present:

An offender who is intent on committing the crime;
A victim who is seen by the offender as vulnerable;
An environment that brings them together in the same area.

Also, most criminals dont want to be seen or observed. Keep your eyes and ears open to anything suspicious or unfamiliar and call the police. We are here to work with you to make Sacramento the best place to live and work.

H. Allen Hight Safety with Helmets Night

H. Allen Hight Elementary School will be hosting a Safety with Helmets Night on Tuesday May 12th from 5 to 7pm.

This fun-filled event will support students riding safely.
Students and parents are asked to come with their bicycles and helmets.
Every helmet will be checked to see if it is damaged and if it fits properly.
No students will leave without a helmet – if theirs will not work they will receive a new helmet for free.

Free food, prizes and information will be provided.

Over the past couple of months I have been working on getting a Helmet Safety Night for the elementary school. At this time I am still short volunteers. This is and has been a great need in our community. We will be promoting the safety of wearing a helmet during bicycling, skateboarding, scooters and what are the proper guidelines for all while riding throughout the community.

Food will be provided by Rubios.

If you have a helmet, bring it with you. We will be checking for damaged helmets, as well as for helmets that are too big or too small and replacing them. (While supplies last)..

The Natomas Police and Community Resource Center Needs Donations and Volunteers

The Natomas Police & Community Resource Center has been serving the community for almost 4 months now and the volunteers are doing an outstanding job. They are serving hundreds of neighbors each month and hosting many community meetings, trainings and office hours.

The Center is also frequented by lots of Sacramento Police Officers who stop in to use the facilities, grab a snack, fax or copy something, use the phones or computers or eat their lunch.

This community has done a tremendous job staffing the Center with volunteers and all the goods and supplies needed to keep the place going.

There are a few needs right now and if any of you have the ability to help out it would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the list:

treats for the officers and volunteers (cookies, popcorn, brownies, fruit, etc.)

April 15 Meeting Update by Angelique Ashby

The April meeting went very well earlier this week and Creekside has lots to look forward to (and many fun opportunities to get involved).

We talked about our upcoming Creek Week clean up event - happening on Sunday April 26th at 1pm. We will be meeting at Sean and Casey's house (2921 North Platte).

Sean has spoken with the Creek Week folks and he has bags and tools. I am bringing plastic gloves and Lewis Communities is providing water and cookies. We also invited the church that meets at Hight and the PTA of Hight as well. This event is open to everyone.

We will have some more wildflower/poppy seeds to be spread as we go too (this was fun last year and we have lots of colorful flowers now)...

Next month's meeting (May) will be canceled because we plan to walk to the community and invite new neighbors to join us.

The goal is to have as many Creekside neighbors as possible on the Yahoo Group and at the same time to invite more families to get involved in our growing and expanding neighborhood efforts.

In the next few weeks we will need to talk about walking teams and materials to take with us as we go door to door to invite new members.

We also discussed our upcoming 4th of July celebration. We talked about expanding it to start a little earlier in the afternoon with a bike parade for the kids and maybe some games, like water balloon toss or three legged races, etc...

It would be best to have a small committee that addresses the details of this fun event - as a post meeting task I contacted the folks who live on the Ct. or who have helped in the past. Maricel & John will spearhead the day's events and I will help.

We are looking for a couple more neighbors to help us plan!

Lastly, we talked about crime and safety issues, Officer Wetterer was in attendance and educated us on some safety concerns. Probably the most important ones were not to leave valuables (including garage door openers) in your cars outside of the garage overnight. While car thefts and break ins are down in the City - they are up in Natomas.

Also, if a stranger knocks on your door - do not ignore it. YOU DO NOT have to open the door - but you NEED to say something to let them know you are home. It can be "We aren't available right now" or "We aren't answering the door right now". But it is important not to just ignore them because many home invasions have started with an unanswered knock on the door and when the suspect believes you are not home he jumps the fence and breaks in through the back.

This does not mean every stranger is a home invader but it does mean that you need to let every stranger know you are home when they knock on the door.

Keep an eye out for your neighbors - if you see someone going over a fence or around the back of a neighbors home call the police.

And lastly we all need to keep our eyes open for suspicious activity in the park and around our homes. It was a rough week for Creekside with crime. If you see crimes in progress call 911. If you see suspicious activity call the police non-emergency number 264-5471.

Always get the license plate numbers of suspicious cars and never hesitate to call if you feel you should.

Meet up with neighbors (everyone is invited) to help clean the creek area along Broadwater and the Regional Park in Creekside.

Last year participants dropped wildflower and California Poppy seeds which have resulted in hillsides flushed with both.

Thank you to Sean and Casey, Autumn and the Creekside Playgroup for organizing the First Annual North Platte (and neighbors) Easter Egg Hunt. Ten houses participated by hiding eggs in their front yards for about 25 children to come and hunt. It was really fun for the kids and a nice get to know your neighbor event. Thank you to Safeway for donating donuts and to It's A Grind for donating the coffee. Plans for the 2nd Annual North Platte Easter Egg Hunt 2010 are underway!

Last night was a great meeting with a ton of information.

There is a committee forming to address traffic concerns related to Hight.

If you would like to join that committee and work with the school district and the city to improve the traffic safety issues please let me know.

Captain Hahn gave us some crime updates and wants to remind everyone that when a stranger knocks on your front door..... Do not ignore them!

You do not have to open the door but somehow you need to let them know you are home.

You can tell them through the door that you are not interested or you can pretend someone else is home and talk to them, say something like, no I am not expecting anyone.

Just don't ignore them because a recent trend has folks knocking to see if anyone is home and if no one answers they go around to a back or side door and break in.

This trend is one that suggests if you are home and you let them know that you are home you won't become their next victim.

Not every stranger is a home invader but it doesn't hurt to let folks know you are home.

If you see someone in your neighborhood knocking on doors and then going around to the back of the house please report that to the police immediately.

Captain Hahn also let us know that Natomas is leading the City in crime reduction!

He credits a connected community, involved and engaged officers and neighbors who care and watch out for one another.

He did not say it but we all know it doesn't hurt that we have a great captain too.

Lastly we had a presentation from Allegahny properties. They are develoung the land on the west side of East Commerce between Del Paso and down past Arena to Natomas Crossing.

The project is in various stages but in the long term includes big stores like Lowes and lots of dining spots, like an Uno's grill.

They also have a long term plan to build a large hospital site.

It is an exciting project and most importantly this developer is looking at creative ways to help address some of this communities biggest challenges.

They shared with us a new idea that would allow the retailers that come into their new spaces to pay into a CFD, Community Facilities District to help pay for things like area specific crime and safety efforts.

This is a tremendous gesture and great news for the future as this project builds out.

This is another sign that some community partners are thinking of creative solutions to help bridge the gaps in service for this region. In the long run these efforts will make the difference for Natomas.

Vote for Speed Lumps

As you probably know, we have more than our share of unsafe driving conditions here in Creekside along Kokomo Drive and North Park Drive. The Creekside Neighborhood Association has lobbied the City of Sacramento for speed lumps to help improve safety conditions in our neighborhood.

If you live in one of the targeted areas, you have an opportunity to help. You should have received a ballot from the City for Sacramento within the last week requesting your input on the proposed speed lumps.

The Creekside Neighborhood Association would like you to vote YES and submit your ballot ASAP. We’re hoping that these additional safety measures will improve traffic conditions in our community. (BTW, speed lumps are approved by our local fire department and emergency response teams over speed humps/bumps, as speed lumps are designed with cut-outs that reduce response time of emergency vehicles on residential streets.)

Airport (DNA) Light Rail Extension Project.

We would like to remind you about this week's Public Open House to discuss the "Green Line to the River District" project (formerly known as MOS-1) and Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR). The open house is scheduled for this Wednesday, March 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sacramento Valley Station (Amtrak Depot, west end) at 5th and H streets in downtown Sacramento .

The "Green Line to the River District" will create approximately one mile of new light rail track on 7th Street , running from H Street to Richards Boulevard . It will connect with existing light rail tracks downtown and operate as an independent 2.2-mile line from Richards Boulevard to the existing station at 13th Street between Q and R streets.

The Open House will include a presentation on the project and Draft EIR at 6:00 p.m. Verbal comments will be documented by a court reporter, and attendees may also submit written comments.

The driver got out of the car and started to walk away
from the officer.  The female passenger began yelling
at the officer for harassment.  The driver then ran away
from the officer.  He ran past the AM/PM, across San Juan,
around Kragen, across Northgate and was eventually caught
by Officer Motter passed the Jiffy Lube.  He was arrested
for resisting an officer, suspended Drivers license and two
misdemeanor warrants.  The warrants were for suspended
drivers license and expired registration.  While the
pursuit was going, the female passenger drove off in the
car.

car/person, N. Natomas.  We received a call from Comcast
security about a suspicious car in the parking lot.  They
called due to the increase in car burglaries and they
thought the car was casing the lot.  Turns out - the car
was someone from the near by hotels on Advantage that were
looking for suspicious people that were possibly attempting
to burglarize cars in their hotel lots.  The car that was
possibly casing the nearby lots was a black 2-door Honda
Civic. Great job by all involved by noting being pro-active
regarding suspicious activity.

**Update** A little more information on the car that was
used to rob the Jamba Juice... It is a late 80's, 4-door,
Chevy Caprice. Primer grey on the bottom with a white top.
missing the front grill and had dents and scratches all
over it. It also had a old blue and yellow license plate.

The number of car break-ins around the area has skyrocketed . . . more and more homes [and] cars are being broken into.

"When I looked at the numbers I was just like wow. To be aware of this was an eye opener," said victim Vanita Morris.

Morris has been driving a rental car after her own car was stolen less than two weeks ago.

Days later, she said several of her neighbors' cars were broken into.

"Just in my apartment complex alone there were seven, and unfortunately, my neighbors didn't want to report it," Morris said.

Morris said she is getting involved with the Natomas Crime and Safety Leadership Team.

The organization works closely with police to make [sure their] residents are less of a target.

"The difference is between just sitting back and letting things happen or looking out the window and saying, 'That doesn't look right. I am going to call police,'" said Angelique Ashby, a community activist.

. . . "The smallest of things that you never think about can lead us to a suspect, and if you catch one person responsible for one crime they are most likely responsible for 20 or 30 others," said Daniel Hahn, with the Sacramento police.

These are happening during the day, primarily between school hours. The burglars are going into the backyard and going into the house through side doors and windows.

Natomas Auto Burglaries

I have a received several recent inquiries about auto burglaries. Between 2/1/09 and 2/19/09 there have been 49 report vehicles burglarized in all of Natomas. This number is probably lower then actual burglaries because all of the reports have probably not made it through the computer system or beenreported yet. In January during this same time frame there were 39 auto burglaries.

So, what does this mean.....we are seeing an increase recently in vehicle burglaries (in addition to other property crimes such as residential burglaries). Please remember to keep an eye out in your neighborhood for suspicious activity and call it in. I have listed a few facts about the recent auto burglaries in Natomas. I have also attached a map of these crimes so you can see where they are occurring.
* 31 have occurred in N. Natomas
* 15 have occurred in S. Natomas
* 3 have occurred in Gardenland/Northgate
* Most frequent day they occur is Sunday (18)
* Second most frequent day has been Tuesday (9)
* Most occur while it is dark

Reminders:
* Keep valuables out of sight in your car (ie keep in trunk, glove box, etc.)
* Park in well lit locations
* Park in your garage if possible.
* Call in suspicious people in your neighborhood that might be casing homes or cars.
* Keep your porch light, side light or any light on or on motion detector.

Regional Park Tree Planting October 18th

As you may have noticed, there has been considerable activity going on at the Regional Park. Bike/Jogging paths have been installed and beautiful trees and landscaping have been added.

As a continuation of this great progress, Friends of the Park has just announced a tree planting in the North Natomas Regional Park on Saturday, Oct 18th from 8:30-12:30. They will plant over 50 trees with the help of the Sac Tree Foundation and support from Ray Tretheway's office. The effort will require over 100 volunteers. Creekside Natomas Neighborhood Association Meeting

Meeting Summary

I had the pleasure of attending the Creekside Natomas Neighborhood Association meeting on June 18, 2008. It was very clear from the comments, that many of the residents feel Natomas has not realized the lofty goals that drove its original conception and development. They were frustrated because:

1) They felt the community had been planned through isolated decision making. The result has been a community that currently has a lack of safe walking and biking paths and too little planning and funding of the regional park. To correct those missteps, they thought an important role of the next Mayor of Sacramento is to help plan the continued growth of Natomas in a collaborative manner that considers how decisions will affect the community as a whole.

2) There are a number of vacant buildings, stripmalls, foreclosed homes and unkept lots and yards that do not show the pride and vibrancy of the neighborhood.

3) Low-income housing is not distributed throughout the community; instead, developers have placed these units in certain pockets. The residents felt that that created an isolated dynamic that was not positive for the community.

4) The lack of technological jobs in Natomas, explaining that many Natomas residents have technology backgrounds that arenʼt being utilized.

5) They feel that public safety is not prioritized. There’s a lack of a Fire station on the west side of I-5, a police substation and of more officers to respond to property crimes. Though they were appreciative of the work of Dan Hahn, they stated that they needed the officer force necessary to investigate all of the crimes that were committed.

6) There are not enough meaningful programs and services for youth.

My Response

When I asked residents why they decided to attend that nightʼs meeting they cited a strong commitment to the community and a specific interest in the growth of the neighborhood as it affects their family and friends. I understand the frustration Natomas residents feel about the disconnect from Sacramento, and I will help to foster the unrealized potential of this community by continuing these productive discussions and moving forward on critical actions. Natomas residents want the next Mayor of Sacramento to ensure that tax dollars will be appropriately spent on public safety, including police and fire protection. I will ensure that the community has access to their fair share of these important city resources.

Hey Guys - I know there is a lot going on right now with crime and the safety forum coming up on Monday night at 6:30 at Inderkum (I know lots of you are planning to attend - and that is fantastic).

Also, I think most, if not all of you, know that the new school (Hight) is now slated to be host to a community day school for about 20 middle school kids who have been expelled for whatever reasons from regular school.

If you don't already know about this please read the extensive article written on the web page www.natomasbuzz.com

The Buzz is a wonderful news source for Natomas - it is written by a journalist who lives in North Natomas. She does a really great job. I suggest you mark the page and check it every now and again to see what's up in our region. She is always way ahead of the Media News and the Bee for the goings on in Natomas.

You will see when you read that article that Sean Avalos (Creekside Leadership) is leading our community effort to have some input on this issue with the school district.

He has been able to set a meeting for Tuesday night, July 1st at 6:30 pm at Heron School. At that time we, as a neighborhood and community, need to share our concerns and get answers to our questions.

Please try to attend both meetings next week (Monday and Tuesday both at 6:30, Monday at Inderkum and Tuesday at Heron, Monday is for Public Safety and Tuesday is the school issue).

One last note - I know its a lot to deal with all at once - don't get discouraged. We are a resilient neighborhood and we will find our way through all of this and be better, stronger and closer when this is all behind us.

Also, I hope all of you in Creekside are planning to spend the 4th of July together on Naponee Ct at 6:30 (don't forget to bring your own picnic dinner and blankets or chairs and a treat to share... BBQs will be available). See you all in one week, when we can celebrate as a community all of our efforts.

Celebrate the 4th of July with Us!

Come celebrate the 4th of July with your neighbors! We will be meeting at 6:30pm on Naponee Ct. (at the end of Winamac Dr.) to have some fun.

What to bring:
1 - A picnic dinner for your family (BBQ grills will be available if you want to bring something to cook on those but you willneed to bring all your own stuff)

2 - Chairs and/or a blanket for your family

3 - A dessert to share (we will have a community dessert table)

4 - Whatever fireworks you would like to bring.

*We know the Governor is advising no fireworks this 4th of July and we do understand the fire hazards. The goal in Creekside is to bring the community together and safely do a small neighborhood fireworks show. We will have buckets and shovels at the ready.

We will also keep you posted; if it becomes just too dangerous we will cancel.

Creekside Neighborhood Yard Sale a Success!

The first annual Creekside Neighborhood Yard sale was a big hit. Organized by the Creekside North Platte Neighborhood Watch Group over a half dozen homes participated and lots of folks enjoyed mingling up and down the street - getting to know each other and finding treasures along the way.

It was pretty hot but the kids sold lemonade to keep everyone cool. All in all a great day and a wonderful event. These types of get-togethers create a real sense of community pride and bring us all closer together - excellent job North Platte Team!

Mayoral Candidate Kevin Johnson Visits Creekside

Kevin Johnson requested an opportunity to meet the neighbors in Creekside. He attended the June meeting and held an open discussion with members of our community about the challenges and successes we have faced in North Natomas.
He shared with us his priorities which are: public safety, education and creating a business friendly city.

He did not come to the meeting with a lot of background about Natomas but he asked a lot of questions and seemed interested in learning.

Creekside Neighborhood Association is not endorsing a candidate but we would allow any candidate interested in speaking to our neighborhood the opportunity to do so. We have not been asked by any other candidates in the current mayoral race (at least not yet) for that opportunity.

Thank you to all who participated - Creekside, as always, was a wonderful example of what makes Natomas great... The people who live here and have tremendous passion about helping this region meet its potential.

Creekside kids get a safe path to school!!!

The linear park that runs along Broadwater now connects to a new path leading straight to Inderkum High School.

We want to thank Councilmember Tretheway and the City staff and neighbors from Natomas Park (particularly Rosemarie) for seeing this project through.

Creekside is now connected to the regional park and we won't have to worry about our teenagers walking along Del Paso or through the mud to get to school.

Creekside Neighbors Celebrate Creek Week

Creekside neighbors came together last saturday morning to celebrate Earth Day by doing our part to beautify the neighborhood. Over 40 kids and adults alike rolled up their sleeves, put on their gloves, and traversed the half mile stretch of creek that runs along Broadwater - picking up trash, spreading wildflower seeds and gaining a greater appreciation for the beauty this creek lends to our neighborhood.

Thanks to all who organized and participated. These group efforts make an incredible difference to this community and are a large part of what continues to make Creekside a unique and special place to call home.

Creek Week Clean-Up April 20th!

I would like to invite all of Creekside to participate in our first annual Creekside Creek Week Clean-up.

Creek Week Runs from April 18 through April 26. Creekside will join in on Sunday, April 20, 2008. We will meet at 2921 N Platte Way at 9 a.m. for coffee and donuts. We will then make our way to the linear park and clean up our "creek" for about an hour or so.

This is a great opportunity to meet your neigbhors and build community pride. Don't forget to bring the kids and make this a family event. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.

Hey Neighbors....

Tomorrow night at 7pm is the monthly Creekside Neighborhood Association gathering at Homecoming Apartments (upstairs in the main clubhouse).

This month we will give ourselves a big pat on the back for how we handled the storm and the clean up after the storm. It has been a great month for us and I am so proud of our community.

We had about 25 people show up to help us clean up all the garbage around the neighborhood. Along with our Creekside residents of all ages we had help from Regency Park, Lewis Communities, Councilmember Ray Tretheway, Randi Kay and Dan Roth.

Behind the scenes the City waste department has been terrific - you probably noticed all the trees and all the trash bags have been picked up and taken away...

So please join me tomorrow to discuss our next projects in Creekside and to take a day to celebrate our community pride! See you at 7pm upstairs in the Homecoming Apartments main office...

Creekside Neighbors Rally for "Creekside Cleanup"

Heavy rains and fierce winds swept through our community last week, leaving the neighborhood littered with trash, broken fences, and clogged sewers. Last Saturday Neighbors and Friends joined together for the first ever "Creekside Cleanup". Thanks to great organizing by Angelique Ashby, the dedication of several dozen committed neighbors, the support of Lewis Communities, Ray Tretheway's Office, and our friends and allies in Regency Park, our streets and green spaces are once again litter free. Thank you to all those who dedicated your time and energy in the clean up effort! It is just another example of the wonderful community spirit and PRIDE there is in Creekside.

Creekside Fair Keeps Getting Better

Several hundred Creekside friends and neighbors came out to Kokomo Park today for the biggest and best Creekside Neighborhood Fair yet. Residents were greeted to a host of festivities including live music, face painting, costume contest, photos with Slamson, rock climbing and more. Community groups and city organizations also lined the park with booths and volunteers eager share information and engage in dialogue with residents about community services, neighborhood watch, plans for our parks, schools and a range of other issues facing us here in Creekside.

This year's event was also a great jump start for the newly elected board of directors for the Creekside Neighborhood Association (CNA). Thanks to all who stopped by and visited the CNA booth. It was a pleasure discussing some of the recent accomplishments of the association and hearing your thoughts about the issues that are of greatest concern to you. For those of you that signed up, we will be sending you updates on the association's progress as we work with community and city officials to make Creekside an even better place to live. We will also be sending you regular invitations to our monthly association meeting. Monthly meetings are a great way to meet your neighbors, share your thoughts and concerns in person, and hear from our local community and government leaders about the work they are doing to address our issues.

A lot of time, energy and hard work went into organizing this year's event. We give many thanks to community leaders, city officials, organizers and volunteers whose efforts and support made this year's Fair a success!

Neighborhood Watch Needs You

We are happy to announce the official formation of the Creekside Natomas Neighborhood Watch.

Started by a small group of concerned neighbors who are interested in maintaining a high level of safety and security in Creekside, the watch group had its official kickoff this Fall, and over the past two months held a series of informative workshops led by Community Safety Officer McCray. The workshops focused on personal, auto, and home security. City officials have pledged their support to assist in making this Neighborhood Watch a reality. But as residents of this community, we need to keep up our end of the bargain to make it a success.
We must take action and get involved.
The wonderful thing about a Neighborhood Watch, is that it doesn't require any additional time or commitment. It simply requires us to "Look Out For Each Other." Here are a few simple steps that you can make to impact the safety in Creekside:
1) Listen to your senses, and ACT.
When you see something suspicious or out of the ordinary, report it. Every time. No matter how small, it may be just the piece of information needed to help law enforcement officials put together the puzzle. And, as we all know, Creekside is vying against all the other neighborhoods in North Natomas for law enforcement presence and surveillance. The more incidents that are REPORTED, the more law enforcement support our neighborhood will get.

2) Look Out for Each Other (and exchange information with your neighbors).
The best crime prevention network you have is right next door. And across the street, and on the street behind you, etc. Who knew living so closely to one another could actually be an asset? When it comes to deterring and reporting crime it is. In a neighborhood where no one looks out for each other, criminals have it easy. The only people they need to worry about are those who they are attempting steal from, assault, etc. But in a neighborhood with an aggressive Watch, every house is a potential informant, and we have them surrounded!
Take 5 minutes to exchange information with the neighbors in front, behind and to the sides of you. Not only is it nice to know the names of the people who you're living so close to, but if you see something suspicious, you can alert them as well. Bottom line is, if a neighbor sees a suspicious person peeking around my yard, I want them to be able to call me (after they call the police) and notify me.
3) Use Common Sense and Be Aware of Your Surroundings!
A large percent of crimes happen as a result of people not paying attention to their surroundings and not using common sense. Here are a few tips to consider for improving your safety:
Take a Lap: When arriving home in the evening, drive past your house and take a quick lap around your block. Take notice of anything suspicious that may be going on around your (or your neighbor's) home.
Pull the shades: The holidays are here, and after all the effort of decorating our homes, we want to show them off right? Night time during the holidays is the perfect time for criminals to take inventory of valuables in your home. With the lights on inside, you can't see outside! So, please draw the curtains and pull down the shades at night. If you must show off your home during the holidays, make sure it's the outside.
Garages and Car Locks were made for a reason: With the recent spike in car break-ins, it seems appropriate to remind everyone of 3 things we should all be doing anyway.
USING OUR GARAGES. Cars parked in the street not only are more suceptible to vandalism and theft, but they create terrible hazards to the children playing on our streets.
REMOVING VALUABLES: It's pretty simple. If you don't, they will.
LOCKING OUR CARS. While very cute and fairly clean, our neighborhood isn't the set of "leave it to beaver" or "father knows best". If you leave valuables in an unlocked car, please don't be surprised if they aren't there in the morning. Of course, if we all just followed the first of the bulleted reminders, we could leave our cars unlocked with valuables in them to our heart's content.
Finally, the reason I love this blog, is because it provides a forum for neighbors to engage in open dialogue and share their thoughts about what makes Creekside a great place, and what can make it better. What I've found is that our small community is very vocal and passionate about our quality of life. With that said, I encourage all of you to take your passions a step further and get involved in the neighborhood. We are a 100% volunteer group. So without neighbors rolling up their sleeves to get involved in both small and large ways, this association doesn't exist. So I urge you, please get involved. Attend a monthly association meeting or join the Neighborhood Watch. If for no other reason than to stay informed about what is going on in the neighborhood, it will make a world of difference in Creekside.

Creekside Community Fair A Success

To the Neighbors and Friends of Creekside,

Thank you for making this year's Community Fair a huge success! The day was filled with games, contests, music and prizes. Most importantly, it was a great chance to mingle with neighbors and community leaders to talk about what makes Creekside a great place to live, as well as what we would all like to see improve.

Thank you to our city and county officials like Councilmember Ray Tretheway, as well as law enforcement officials like officer McCray for spending the day hearing the concerns (and praise) of our neighbors.

Thank you to Lewis Communities for your constant support and dedication to the neighborhood. We are fortunate to have such a generous and committed partners.

2nd Annual Community Fair October 21st

Fall in Sacramento is truly a special time of year. The leaves are changing color and the kids are back in school. This time of year also marks the return of a new tradition in Creekside. The Annual Community Fair. For those of you who attended last year, it was a great opportunity to spend a few hours in the park and mingle with neighbors, community leaders, and have some fun with family and friends. This year there is even more in store. There will be games, face painting and bounce house fun, along with a rock climbing wall, live music, and a special appearance by Slamson! Take some time on Saturday, October 21st, to walk over to Kokomo Park from 11-2 and Celebrate Creekside. See you there!

In a few short years, Creekside Natomas has grown from a small outcrop of homes on the fringes of farmland, to a thriving, diverse and dynamic community. This is a community that values the opinions and viewpoints of each of its residents. Use this space to share with the community what matters to you. Is it development of the regional park? Regional Park Planning Underway

Many of us moved to North Natomas because of the proposed regional park. We can all remember the exciting conversations had with sales representatives during our model tours discussing the future of our neighborhood and the wonderful Regional Park that would be the center of it all.

In our minds, we imagined this community as the next land park (or better). Many have since been discouraged at the lack of development of our park. We drive by the vast undeveloped field and wonder if our vision will ever come to fruition. But together we can make it happen.

On June 14th city leaders held a community meeting and forum to discuss the planned development of the park and to gain public input on how to spend the funds already approved for the next phase of development.

Initial proposed options, including development along Natomas Park Blvd and along the opposite bank of the pond, were set aside due a debate over juristiction and funding sources. New options that were favored included a dog park on the west side of the park and development of the perimeter of the park.

Regency Park and Natomas Park residents are clearly getting organized. On the one hand, this is great because the more people involved the quicker our park can become a reality. But on the other hand, they will be representing their own interests, not necessarily those of our community. As you well know, much of their side of the park has already been somewhat developed, while our side continues to lag behind. At the very least we should have a path for our kids to get to Inderkum High School instead of having to trample through weeds and the current dirt path. Also, it would be great for the current bike/walk trail that circles the pond to connect to our neighborhood so that we can enjoy the walk to the pond without having to cross back and forth over North Park Drive.

The city is still accepting public comment and input. Whether you share these specific views or have your own ideas, it is imperative that we have a strong contigency from Creekside to have our concerns represented at these public forums and ensure that the broadwater side of the park is equally developed. Creekside Pride

Creekside is a community of wonderful diversity and promise. And it is wonderful to see so many neighbors taking pride in our community. However, it only takes the actions of a few individuals to ruin the efforts of the group. We all have to do our part to make this community the safe, clean, and beautiful place it can be.

Why are neighborhoods like Land Park, East Sacramento and Natomas Park such desirable places to live? Why have the home values in those communities continued to climb while those in our community have leveled off and dropped? It is because the residents in those neighborhoods have set a standard for their community that inspires it to be great. They have made a commitment to doing a few "little things" that make a big difference.

Help Creekside become the community we know it can be by doing a few of these "little things."

Maintain your lawn and property. This is the single biggest statement a community says about its character, its values, and its pride. Overgrown lawns and weeds are not only a haven for unwanted pests, but are also a significant fire hazard.
Park in your garage (or at least your driveway). Vehicles parked on the side of the street can obstruct the view of small children playing.
Obey speed limits and traffic signs.
Keep noise levels down after 10pm. Our properties are just feet apart from each other, and the sound carries easily into the homes of others. Especially on beautiful summer nights when we open our windows to let the warm breezes in. Respect your neighbors by keeping the noise down.
Keep parks and public spaces clean. We are fortunate to have beautifully landscaped parks and trails surrounding our community. Encourage your entire family to use trash and recycle bins.

This section is something we are going to call "Creekside Pride." Take a moment to share the things that you see happening in our community that make you feel proud to call this place home.
